Formal. To absorb all the attention or interest of someone. It is very close in meaning to preoccupy, often interchangeable, but 'engross' might imply a more pleasant or chosen absorption. 'A good book can engross you' works, 'his financial worries preoccupy him' works.

Interchangeable when the focus is on mental engagement. 'The puzzle absorbs his mind' works, 'his studies preoccupy him' works.
