Can sometimes be used interchangeably with 'gatekeeper' when referring to someone protecting a physical entrance or information, but 'guardian' carries more of a sense of care and protection, less of control or restriction. 'The guardian of the library's rare books' works, 'The guardian of the internet's content' generally doesn't.
