Everyday. 'Sound' is the general term for anything heard. 'Noise' specifically implies an unwanted or unpleasant sound. You can hear a 'sound' of music, but usually 'noise' of traffic. 'Did you hear that sound?' works for any auditory input, 'Did you hear that noise?' implies something disturbing.

Literary/formal. Refers to a prolonged, loud, and unpleasant sound, often of many voices or machines. 'The din of the factory was deafening' works. Less common for a sudden, single loud sound. Not interchangeable in everyday casual contexts for a simple 'noise'.
