Interchangeable with 'horde' when describing a large group, but 'throng' doesn't necessarily imply disorder or rapid movement. 'A throng of people gathered' works, 'A throng of invaders' is less common than 'horde of invaders'.

Everyday/general. A more neutral term for a group of people, often with shared ancestry, culture, and leadership. Interchangeable with 'horde' only in the sense of an organized ethnic group, but 'tribe' does not carry the connotation of large, disorderly movement. 'Native American tribes' works, 'A horde of tribes' is contradictory.
