Everyday/Technical. A circumstance, fact, or influence that contributes to a result or outcome. 'Factor' is a very broad synonym for something that influences an outcome. 'Parameters' are typically a predefined set of factors that define a system's boundaries. 'Key success factors' works, 'adjust the system parameters' works.

In mathematics and programming, a variable is something whose value can change, whereas a parameter often refers to a fixed value or a defining characteristic within a specific context. 'Control the variables' works, 'set the parameters for the experiment' works.
