Literary/formal. Refers to a bottomless or immeasurably deep chasm, often with connotations of danger or extreme emptiness. 'The ocean abyss' works. 'Depths' is broader and can refer to deep parts of anything, physical or abstract, without necessarily implying bottomlessness.
